I'm in Spanish 2 and I don't know WTF my teacher is talking about...?

I have a really bad teacher that can't teach or speak English and i'm going on to Spanish 3 next year... What is Imperfect and Preterite? When and how do I use them? When I read Q's I don't know what they mean or say. PLEASE HELP!!
